FOREST OF READING®
FESTIVAL OF TREES
The Ontario Library Association and Harbourfront Centre are pleased to partner for the Forest of
Reading® Festival of Trees on Thursday, May 17, 2007. The Festival will be a culminating
celebration of Canadian authors, illustrators and the children and young adults who enjoy these
nominated books. Over 60 authors will be there, 4000 children and young adults and a buzz and
excitement that you cannot even quantify. In the past the individual tree Awards have stood alone,
but on May 17th they all come together for this amazing Forest® event. You will not want to
miss this! Come celebrate CANADIAN books, authors/illustrators and the love of reading!
Executive Director, Larry Moore, is equally excited as the readers. The excitement at the
ceremonies in which the children and young people give their awards each year has always been
palpable! I cannot imagine the level of thrill this fabulous new festival is going to generate.
OLA President, Esther Rosenfeld echo's his enthusiasm. Children's and Young Adult authors are
not usually treated as media stars, so it's wonderful to see thousands of children and teens cheering
for their favourite authors as if they were rock stars or sports celebrities at this exhilarating
event.
The Forest of Reading® programs are a series of Province-wide children-choice award programs
run in schools, public libraries and homes. Included in the Forest are the Blue Spruce Award
(K-Gr. 2), Silver Birch Award® (Gr. 4-6), Silver Birch Express Award® (Gr. 3-4), Red Maple
Award (Gr. 7-8), and the White Pine Award (Gr. 9-12). In 2006 more that 220,000 children
and young adults participated and we are hoping for even a bigger success in 2007. Visit
www.accessola.com for more information on these programs.
The Ontario Library Association creates programs, advocacy and promotion for its 5,500 members in
college, public, school, and university libraries across Ontario. The mission of the Ontario
Library Association is to foster free public access to information and to promote Canada's history
and culture through the programs and services of the libraries of Ontario.
