Ajax Public Library and Oshawa Public Library
Literacy Outreach
The Books for Babies program continues to grow in the Durham Region.
Initiated by the Friends of Ajax and Oshawa Public Libraries - the program
provides literacy kits to the parents of newborns. With the support of the
Early Years challenge Fund the program is receiving a new publicity boost
with the creation of a poster with tear off coupon. These posters are being
distributed to libraries, community centres, hospitals, doctors, offices
etc.

SMARTStart Library: First Year Students Get an Edge
In 2002, the James A. Gibson Library developed an hour-long library orientation called SMARTStart Library, and promoted it during the university's summer orientation program. Students who registered attended one 50-minute session that was designed to introduce them to the physical layout of the Library, Library services, and basic research skills. The program grew in its second year and one professor even assigned bonus marks to students in her class who attended. SMARTStart Library has been a successful new program and is helping students make the transition to using a university library.

AlphaPlus is the learning resource and library services delivery agency for 400 Adult literacy agencies in Ontario, delivering services to 50,000 literacy learners in 4 streams: Deaf, Native, Francophone and Anglophone. Over the years, this provincial adult literacy delivery system, administered by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, has had many informal collaborations with the provincial library systems. This poster session will present the results of the research conducted in Phase I of AlphaPlus' Linking Literacy and Libraries Project.

Moonlight Madness
Pembroke Public library is nestled in the heart of downtown Pembroke. Every year in early December the downtown merchants host Moonlight Madness when they are open until 10:00 P.M. and offer special savings to Christmas shoppers.
This year the library's Children Department hosted its own midnight madness. The library stayed open until 10:00 P.M. and offered free children's programming to parents who were shopping down town. Parents dropped their children off after preregistering and then retrieved them after they had finished their downtown Christmas shopping. Parents were provided with safe free programming while they shopped and the library was able to present its many programs to new families.

TD Summer Reading Club 2004: Fire Up Your Imagination
The TD Summer Reading Club is a program run every year by the Toronto
Public Library for the children of Ontario. This year the artist is Paul
Morin, and the theme is "Fire up your Imagination: Dragons, quests, and
books". Viewers will be delighted by a large poster of the work of Paul
Morin, the stickers which go with the poster, and information on how the TD
Summer Reading Club is run. This year the National Library is taking the TD
Summer Reading Club across Canada.

Online Masters Programs in Teacher-Librarianship
Jeanne Buckley is a student in the Online Masters Program in Teacher-Librarianship at University of Alberta. Petra Smith is a student in the Online Masters Program in Teacher-Librarianship at Charles Sturt University. These masters of education programs are designed for practicing teachers and teacher-librarians. They will share their experiences as students in these programs discuss how teachers and teacher-librarians can enroll in these programs.

An Online Guide to Researching a Dentistry Essay
Dentistry students are often ill equipped to do research essays. In response to this need, an online guide to researching a dentistry essay has been developed at the University of Toronto. This guide gives students an understanding of the process of library research, along with a wide variety of practical advice and searching strategies. It covers such topics as where to start one's research, how to decipher citations, and how to use various indexes and the library catalogue to locate dentistry articles, books, and dissertations. The guide uses dentistry-related examples, and includes hyperlinks to related resources.

Emergent Literacy Storytimes
Review of the introduction of Emergent Literacy principles into the Library's storytime programming including: * training session held for staff in August 2003;
* creation of a storytime newsletter; * creation of emergent literacy storytime handouts.

Book-based, Library-produced Children's Television Series
This poster session will provide an opportunity to find out how easy it is to produce book-based in-house TV programming. The message is simple - that reading, learning and growth can go hand-in-hand using TV as a delivery medium.

Early Literacy project
The Oakville Public Library launched a new early literacy initiative in its Central Branch in 2003: The Discovery Centre. It houses puppets, toys, games and objects that enhance early literacy. The room is meant for both children and parents to enjoy together.

Ontario Public Library Network 24by7 TEKdesk Project
24by7 TEKdesk is a live and virtual help desk for all Ontario public library staff and volunteers. With a staff of 6, the project operates 6 days / 48 hours per week based out of Peterborough (PPL). The service includes unlimited one-on-one phone support, multimedia tutorials, custom keyword-searchable database of tips and articles and useful resources. 24by7 TEKdesk is recipient of the federal LibraryNet Best Practices 2003 award and nominated for the provincial Minister of Culture's award for Innovation 2003.
Port Hope Public Library
Port Hope 210 Celebrations 1793-2003
June 7,8 2003 the Municipality of Port Hope celebrated the 210th anniversary of the arrival of the first settlers in the area. Celebrations included a re-enactment of the historic landing of settlers, a replica 18th century encampment, Settlers' Reunion, parade, and public sails on a "tall ship". The Port Hope Public Library played a key role in the weekend's activities. The Library was open for extended hours and featured a museum exhibition, genealogical resources, the "Portals of Port Hope" photography show, "We are all settlers" display, and more.

The Public Service Announcement as a Learning Tool

A video/DVD and information pamphlet distributed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to inform the public of the dangers of drug trafficking was the launching point for an activity designed to give secondary school students practice with reading and writing activities modeled on the Ontario Literacy Test. This activity was extended to integrate research skills using library resources. Students gained some useful real life knowledge and practiced valuable research skills. Teachers and students were made aware of a free resource with a variety of cross-curricular uses.
