PROFILE: I always wanted to be a writer but I knew it would be difficult to make a living at it in this country, so I went back to university when I was in my '30s to get a degree in English and to become a teacher. While at Trent, I published my first novel, The Weekend Man, It was received well and my path was set. After graduation, I became an English teacher at Ridley College where I taught for 20 years. My second book, In the Middle of a Life won the UK Faber Award and the Toronto Book Award. The Age of Longing was nominated for the Giller Prize and the Governor General's Award but it was my tenth book, Clara Callan, that won both those awards and the Trillium Award for me.
