Think you haven't? Sure you have!
When working together with Ken, the department head of Geography, three years ago, I introduced his grade 9 students to the library’s note-making sheets. In addition to teaching them how to take point form notes, I explained that there was to be no printing as they researched, and that they were to record their bibliographic data as they went along. This way, they were practicing academic honesty in addition to forming a better understanding of the materials they were researching.
Last year, when working on an integrated unit with Ken plus four other staff from different departments, we were discussing the research process. When I insisted on incorporating the note-making sheets, Ken spoke up and told the group that the previous year, on a small research assignment; he had one class use the note-making sheets and the other he did not. He said the class who included this step in the process produced much better work and their overall marks were significantly higher. Needless to say, everyone was eager to use them!
