Here’s how!

 2.   Gather and Document Evidence

        Facility Improvements

What is it?

What does it look like?

The function, design and layout of your facility can have a huge impact on student usage and ultimately, student success.

Consider the following:

  • does your library feel welcoming to students and staff?
  • Is it comfortable, safe and barrier-free?
  • Are there posters or artwork that add interest?
  • Are there displays of student work – art and writing?
  • Is there a quiet, comfortable, and inviting reading area that includes displays of new, interesting and varied selections?
  • Is there a periodical display area and a space for current newspapers?
  • As the lighting adequate, both in the reading area and the work area?
  • Are there designated places for whole classes that include whiteboards and screens for teaching?
  • Are there enough computer workstations?
  • Is there a production area for scanning, colour printing, editing, etc.?
  • Has consideration been given to traffic flow?
  • Is there a quiet work area for individual students?
  • Are there seminar rooms provided?
  • Is there a central area for easy selection of student guides?
  • Are designated or special collections well marked?
  • Is there a quiet meeting space assessable for partnering with teachers?

What does it tell me?

  • That the library is indeed the heart of the school
  • That students feel welcome and make good use of the facility
  • That research is made easier for students because they know where to locate materials and how to access help
  • That teachers know what to expect when bringing classes to the library
  • That literacy is celebrated
  • That different learning styles are accommodated
  • That the students recognize the teacher librarian as being a professional
