Ontario Culture Minister Announces Funding for Databases

Knowledge Ontario is a collaboration of libraries, cultural heritage organizations and education institutions.  Through the province's publicly funded libraries, we provide digital content and resources to all Ontarians. Our projects make it easy to connect to information, access help and cultural collections, and build digital literacy and research skills.

Databases signed, sealed and delivered

glitterThey're here! Knowledge Ontario, through its service Resource Ontario, is delighted to announce the databases that have been licensed for all publicly-funded libraries for 2009 through to the end of 2010. Thanks to the generosity of the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Culture, the Resource Ontario committee has negotiated to bring the citizens of Ontario a diverse, informative and essential mix of online database resources

"Our investment in Knowledge Ontario will add six new databases that feature more Canadian content, Francophone resources, and digital collections aimed at teens.

"I am proud of the progress that has been made with Knowledge Ontario and the benefits that it brings to people across the province.

"Through Knowledge Ontario, everyone in Ontario is assured province-wide access to a suite of authoritative electronic resources to meet their research and learning needs. In difficult economic times, it is more important than ever to invest in libraries to bridge the digital divide."

Funding for Francophone databases

Also on January 29, 2009, SOLS and OLS-N announced funding for the Francophone resources that Resource Ontario is proud to present. Here's the text of the announcement that was part of the $15 m illion allocation from the Ministry of Culture:

Through our support, Knowledge Ontario has been able to expand the resources available to public libraries in French under its Resource Ontario project. Supported by a direct grant from the Ministry of Culture, Resource Ontario acquires province-wide licenses that provide Ontarians with on site and remote access to databases through their libraries. Knowledge Ontario has just negotiated a new two year agreement and our funding covers the addition of CEDROM's L'Actualité Francophone Plus product for public libraries. L'Actualité Francophone Plus provides premium Canadian French language content through such sources as L'Actualité, Le Devoir, Le Droit, La Presse, Protégez-vous, Le Soleil, SRC Radio - Bulletin National et Int'l, SRC Télévision - Le Téléjournal / Le Point, Découverte, and Voir.
