Children focus of Trudeau talk

Regina, Sask.  (map) - Alexandre (Sacha) Trudeau, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, will be speaking in Regina on Wednesday.

The Big Brothers of Regina has teamed up with Friends of the Regina Public Library for their annual dinner and auction fundraiser featuring the well-known documentarian.

"This event will give people some education as far as some of the issues children are dealing with around the world. Alexandre has done a lot of things as far as children and the problems and plights that people in different parts of the world deal with. We hope we can educate people on the problems people are dealing with all over the world and raise money to supplement our program," said Terry Renwick, executive director of the Big Brothers of Regina.

The RPL film theatre recently screened two of Trudeau's documentaries, Embedded in Iraq and The Fence. Trudeau travels to war-torn countries to shed light on the impacts of political upheavals on children and their families.

He has also covered conflicts in Beijing and Darfur; the latter will appear in his latest documentary, Refuge.

"(Trudeau) is very low-key. He lets people speak for themselves and presents the contrast between one perspective and another ... That's his presentation style. He doesn't draw too much attention to himself and he isn't afraid to confront controversial subjects. I think that's what he seems to enjoy," said Susan Birley, co-chairperson of the Friends of the RPL.

"A lot of people are very excited to see somebody from the Trudeau family. There are still a lot of people who are interested in Pierre Trudeau and his family and his legacy, so there will be some people coming because of his affiliation with his father," said Birley.

"There will be other people who are aware of his role as a documentary filmmaker and a journalist and will be interested in that perspective, what he has to say. There will also be people interested in supporting the friends of the library and the library board too, so I think it will be a good audience."

The Friends of the RPL will be receiving a portion of the funds raised in recognition of their fifth anniversary as well as the RPL's centennial anniversary.

A number of local businesses donated items for the live and silent auctions taking place after the luncheon. Among the items are complete travel, accommodation, and game ticket packages to the Grey Cup and the Stanley Cup playoffs in Montreal.

Trudeau will be speaking at the Conexus Arts Centre on Wednesday. Tickets are $35 each or $250 for a table of eight. Contact 787-9039 for more information.
