Cobourg (Ont.) Library Invites Town Councillors to Attend Library Meetings

Councillor Bill MacDonald, Member, Cobourg PL Board

Councillors invited to learn about library board

Cobourg, Ontario (map) - Cobourg's public library board is going to get more friendly with its town councillors.

Councillor Bill MacDonald told fellow councillors recently to be prepared to receive an invitation asking them to attend different board meetings. In this way, councillors will have a better handle on what the library is trying to achieve and the issues it faces, he said.

"We just want to make sure each councillor is familiar with the library board and its role as far as the governance of the library is concerned," the board's advocacy committee chair, Janette Johnston, stated in a media release.

The councillors will be asked to attend the monthly library board meetings on a "rotating basis," she said in an interview.

This way they will have "more exposure" to what's going on, she said.

Asked if this was to make it easier to get an increase in funding this fall when budgeting begins for 2009, Ms. Johnston replied, "not really."  "It's not with that in mind at all."

The library receives its main funding from the municipalities of Cobourg and Hamilton Township (where the library also operates branches in Bewdley and Gore's Landing), plus provincial grants.
