I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, but I left at the age of five for a new life in the United States. My family lived first in Columbia, South Carolina, then Hazard, Kentucky, and finally Knoxville, Tennessee before making another move. This time we landed in Canada where I still live today. First we lived in Calgary then I moved to Toronto with my wife a few years ago.
After a childhood of drawing and writing I attended the Alberta College of Art and Design where I studied drawing and printmaking. I worked as a graphic designer and typesetter before embarking on a career in illustration. After a few years of commercial illustration I went back to storytelling and began writing and illustrating my own books. Grumpy Bird is my first book.
My books are inspired by the stories all around me. I get ideas by watching and listening all the time. I also keep a sketchbook and am constantly doodling and creating characters. Once in a while one of those characters leaps off the page and begs for a story.
Interesting facts about Jeremy:
• I used to be a pirate.
• My favourite animal is a squid but I'll settle for an octopus if a squid isn't available.
• I have a six year old daughter named Hermione.
• I won a "number one" shaped pen in a colouring contest in the Calgary Herald when I was nine years old. I liked it so much that I saved it for a very special drawing. The ink in the pen dried up before I ever did that special drawing. I've still got the pen.
• I play the violin.
• My favourite food is apple pie. Yum!!!!
• I wrote Grumpy Bird for my daughter, who was then three. She asked me to do some drawings for her in my sketchbook. She requested "grumpy things". Specifically she asked me to draw a grumpy bear. I drew a grumpy bear. She asked for a grumpy snake. I drew a grumpy snake (you don't want to meet a grumpy snake up close). She asked for a grumpy clock. I drew a grumpy clock. Then she asked for a grumpy bird. I drew a grumpy bird going for a walk. He was wearing red sneakers and looked pretty funny. We both started to laugh and an idea was born! What happens when a grumpy bird goes for a walk? To answer this question I had to write the book.
