B J Bayle and her engineer husband live in Cochrane, AB and have four children and four grandchildren. They both grew up in and were educated in the United States, but after a career move made it necessary to move to Fort Saskatchewan, AB, they became Canadian citizens.
Beginning in 1973, the family spent three years on a remote island in the Philippines where books were scarce even in the barrio schools for Filipino children. With the help of friends there and with donations from both Canada and the U.S. Bayle was able to build a small library much to the delight of the Filipinos—both children and adults.
Back again in Fort Saskatchewan and several years later, she was inspired when she heard of the efforts of the State of Florida to eradicate child abuse and wrote a short story for early readers on that subject, which she donated to the cause. It also was made into a play and performed by children in a Fort Saskatchewan school.
Later, she began to write seriously and entered an historical novel—Secret Behind the Small Door—in the Alberta Writing for Youth Competition where it was short-listed.
Following the advice of Riverwood Publishing of Ontario she revised the manuscript and they published it under the title Trail of Fire.
Mystery at Meander Lake also was published by Riverwood. It was on the recommended reading list in the Canadian Living Magazine and chosen by the Troll Book Club.
Having discovered the rich history of Canada, she researched and wrote a second historical novel—Battle Cry at Batoche. It was published by Beach Holme in Vancouver and has been reissued by Dundurn Press.
Also published by Dundurn, Perilous Passage, an adventure with David Thompson was released in 2007. |
