Wendy A. Lewis is an author from Uxbridge, Ontario who writes books and stories for all ages of young people. Wendy studied English Literature at the University of Toronto and Corporate Communications at Seneca College. She worked in various sales, marketing and public relations positions, and although she liked writing articles for newspapers and business publications, she didn’t have much creative energy left for what she really wanted to do, which was write children’s literature. In 1996, Wendy went on maternity leave and gave birth to a baby girl and twelve short stories, which became her first book, Graveyard Girl. Since then, Wendy has worked at home as a freelance writer, author, and mom to two amazing daughters who inspire countless story ideas.
Wendy loves to learn about and write about nature, animals and fascinating people. To get at the heart of her stories, she has prowled through cemeteries, counted the eggs of a giant Leatherback sea turtle in Costa Rica, jumped out of airplanes, and learned about lacrosse from the Mohawk family of one of Canada's best-ever lacrosse players. She savours the challenge of writing different forms and genres of children’s literature, experimenting with narrative styles and points of view, and stretching against literary conventions.
Wendy sometimes has to juggle diverse projects. While working on rewrites of Freefall and Lacrosse Warrior, for example, she was also writing articles for Barbie, Cheestrings, Rubbermaid, and Sharpie! One of her tricks in focusing on a particular story is to keep “visual aids” near her laptop computer and a “Candle of Concentration” burning nearby. For Fire on the Water, Wendy kept a smiling picture of rascally Ned beside her, and lit a deep blue candle – the colour of Toronto Bay on a clear day. |
