* Antonia Banyard comes from a family who has made several dangerous crossings. Her great grand parents and great great grandparents left England in the 1800s. They settled in South Africa, Zambia, Australia, and India. When she was four years old, her own family emigrated from Zambia to Canada.

* She wrote her first story in Grade Two about a flea who lived in a cat’s ear. She was also inspired by Dr. Seuss and wrote “How the Grinch Stole Easter.” She and her friend illustrated an edition of three copies.

* Her research for Dangerous Crossings! took her as far as Oxford England. She was granted a one-day pass to the Bodleian Library, where she found old and rare documents about David Livingstone’s last crossing.
