Most of my friends call me Jake. My mom, who's from Denmark, sometimes still calls me Yacky (pronounced like "yucky" but with the short "a" sound). I guess I'm still a kid to her, but I'm 42-years-old, a real grown-up. I even have two great kids of my own. (You can find their names on page 28 of Jurassic Poop).
I live in a small town called Almonte. There are only about 3000 people here. If you live in a city, it means you probably pass by more than 3000 people just on your trip to school.
I'm a writer. In the age of computers, this means I'm really a typer. I type so much that often I think it's my fingers that are really writing my stories. I write stories in newspapers and magazines, on Web sites and also for plays and books. I write and type because I love finding and telling stories. And I like playing with words. (Don't tell anyone, but on good days, writing doesn't even feel like work — itŐs just like all day recess!)
I also like acting and performing. My favourite character to act is Chief Bottom, Dung Detective in my play 'The Mysterious Case of Who Dung It?' Chief Bottom knows he'll get the scoop on ancient poop, he just doesn't want to step in it first!
I saw my first coprolite, or fossil poop, ten years ago at the Museum of Nature in Ottawa. (There's a picture of that old turd on p. 19 of the book. Pretty poopy, eh?!) And what did I say when I saw it? "Fossil poop? No way!" I thought it was so cool I wrote a book about it. Hope you have as much fun reading it as I did writing it!
