I was born in Montreal, and my family moved to Ontario right after I graduated from high school in Quebec (grade 11) -- which means I had to go back to high school again to do grade 13. That was a little hard to take! I had a much better time once I got to university (Trent U., in Peterborough).

I have worked for Aboriginal organizations doing research and program development, as a youth employment counsellor, and for the last 20 years, as an editor for Today's Parent. In university I took Native Studies, English, and Adult Education so I guess I actually did end up working in my fields of study. That's kind of surprising -- and lucky -- since as an undergraduate I chose my majors for what I thought was fun and interesting, not what was practical and career-oriented.

Though I have been writing and editing non-fiction for most of my adult life, I discovered fiction writing a bit late. (I'm trying to make up for my slow start, though!) I never really considered it, or thought I was capable of it, until the day I decided to try. Of course it didn't come right out of the blue -- I had been walking around with the character of Gabrielle and bits of her story in my head for a long time before that. But I'm really not sure what flipped the switch and turned me from a person who loves reading stories into a person who loves writing them.

Once I started, I became totally addicted. Now if I'm not working on a book, I feel restless and sort of itchy. And when I finish a story, even though it's a relief, it's a bit sad too. I know I will miss those characters that I've spent a year or more getting to know!

I live in Peterborough, Ontario, with my husband John and our three sons (Riley, Jesse and Aaron). Though we had a menagerie of little pets when the boys were younger, now we are down to one dog, Kira.
