FROM THE EDITOR ..Val Marshall, President
Jami and I are looking forward to meeting all our Friends again at Friends Day at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference on Saturday, 5th February, 2000, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Jami has worked hard to provide an exciting program that will be both thought provoking and educational. Again, we have to thank all of our speakers for giving freely of their expertise and time for the benefit of Friends of the Library.
This year, we have changed the format to include an opening panel discussion on the important topic of gaming regulations. The Round Table discussions after lunch will give everyone an opportunity to exchange ideas and views on important issues that are facing Friends groups such as amalgamation and sponsorships.
Once again, Random House of Canada is sponsoring our Friends Day. This enables us to provide the whole day, including lunch, at a cost of $30.00 per person. The Ontario Library Association has kindly offered to provide registration and administration for our special day.
Please be sure to photo copy the program and the registration form and have your Friends register as soon as possible.
New Friends groups are forming all the time and information on FOCAL is frequently requested. I also had the pleasure of being the Guest Speaker at the Lindsay Friends meeting in September. They are off to a great start! In October, I was also the guest of the Westmount Library in Montreal. Over 40 enthusiastic people turned out to their information evening!
A write-up of our Friends Day at CLA was included in the last issue of Feliciter, the Canadian Library Association Magazine. We thank them for helping to spread the word about Friends.
Volunteers are needed to keep our Friends group growing. Jami Van Haaften will be taking over the role of President in June 2000 and Nancy Goodman has agreed to stand for the position of Vice President. We do need a Secretary, plus a Director for Western Canada and for Central Canada. The Executive keeps in touch mainly by e-mail and meet at the national Friends Days. This is your opportunity to be part of our onward direction.
FRIENDS NEWS FORUM.. MOOSE JAW FRIENDS have partnered with a local book store. Friends receive a 10% discount on all regularly priced books, plus other items in the store. They also receive an additional 5% voucher once they have spent $200. The shop is also selling the Friends fridge magnets and book bags. Their Winter used Book Sale is planned for Sat. 22nd January...just in time for some cosy winter reading!
The founding Meeting of FRIENDS OF THE LINDSAY PUBLIC LIBRARY was held in March this year. 15 people became Founding Members and a Steering Committee was formed. By the fall, they were up and running with a Gigantic Book Sale planned for the end of November.
From the Annual Report of FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES AUSTRALIA , we learn that Friends Groups down-under are continuing to grow. Their National Conference for 1998 was held in Adelaide, the site of the first friends group in their country. The conference attracted 82 delegates from every State and Territory in Australia and included 14 speakers. There was also strong support from Junior Friends Groups.
NORTH YORK FRIENDS face changes now that the Toronto Library encompasses the seven former library systems the Friends must also face amalgamation. At present there are five friends groups in the city. The Friends of the three special collections (Osborne, Merril and Arthur Conan Doyle), the Toronto Friends who cover the southern part of the city and the North York Friends. North York and Toronto Friends are continuing to meet and iron out procedures.
OAKVILLE FRIENDS obtained an Ontario Lottery Corporate Grant of $17,266.00 to purchase reading machines and cassette players for CNIB talking books and descriptive videos for the visually impaired. Their Friendly Greeters for Sunday afternoons, launched earlier in the year, is being extended to all branches. The Friends provide orientation, register new cardholders, sell Friends annual memberships and sell used books.
COBOURG FRIENDS now have a daytime Friends Book Club and an evening group sponsored by the library. Their No-Price Book Sale on 16th October paid off handsomely with over $1200 being raised. Chocolate, Cookies and Santa - again, this year the Friends provided hot chocolate and cookies to all the kids who came to visit Santa at the library after the Santa Claus Parade.
A town-wide awareness campaign, plus delegations to Town Council has finally paid off for FRIENDS OF THE AJAX PUBLIC LIBRARY. They are anticipating approval of a new 34,000 sq. ft.. Main library to be built in 2001. (They already have $250,000 towards their One Million Dollar campaign).
