FRIENDS OF CANADIAN LIBRARIES

5th annual Friends’ Day at OLA

Saturday Feb. 2, 2002

Best Friends @ OLA

We  enjoyed OLA exhibit visitors to the FOCAL booth. Ex Libris, Canada's  national association of retired librarians,  was conveniently located in the neighbouring booth.

Ex Libris President Harry Campbell  will be one of our speakers at the Canadian Library Association Conference.

Hilary Neary delivers an enthusiastic presentation on membership recruitment and development

OLA President Stephen Abrahm drops by during our break to welcome Friends to the OLA community Stephen Abrahm wondered about those "dead soldiers", empty wine bottles placed on each table by Marjorie Hodges. How do they relate to fundraising? Mary Desaulniers of Atikokan had the right answer and won a prize of dinner for four. (Yummy! Kraft Dinner!)

Marjorie Hodges, a retired school teacher, made sure we all paid attention and participated in her "class" on fundraising. Extra marks go to her colleagues from the Oshawa Friends group, including Jim Osborne, who supported her efforts by describing some initiatives. Margaret Aldsworth, book sale co-ordinator, spoke on Oshawa's book sale procedures and policies.

As you can see, Marjorie kept us working hard taking notes, and sharing our ideas and experiences. From left to right: Anne Stevens (Tundra Books), Julie Johnston, Monica Olenroot (President, Ajax Friends), Jami van Haaften (FOCAL President), Lahring Tribe (Random House of Canada) and Val Marshall (FOCAL Past President/Treasurer) FOCAL luncheon guests each received an autographed copy of Julie Johnston's book "Hero of Lesser Causes". Here Jami van Haaften and Ian Leskie reach the front of the line.

Friends' Day at OLA highlighted two sections of our "Best Practices / Innovative Ideas" document.

Best practices document – ideas and success stories gathered from a variety of sources became a "best practice" document handed out during the OLA sessions. Additional copies will be provided in member kits until supplies run out, and the document may also be found on our website at www.friendsoflibraries.ca/best-practices.htm
